Tour Description

Hellisheiði – Drive On Top Of An Active Volcano – Hengill

After free pick up, we will drive on road no 1 toward the south coast of Iceland. Since the moment we leave Reykjavik behind, you will be greeted with wild lava landscapes. Literally, the city ends, wilderness begins. Your noses will be glued to the window looking at the amazing lunar scenes. We will be passing through an active volcano Hengill, where Hellisheiði Power Station is located. The whole area is spitting columns of steam into the air. You can definitely tell something is going on under this mountain and being an eyewitness to this untamed force of nature would be a great memory for you!

Highlights

Hveragerdi
The first stop will be in Hveragerði. At the local bakery, you can get freshly brewed coffee (or tea) and some local Icelandic delicacies. In the same building, there is Earthquake Museum where you can experience the trembling ground yourself. It was built after a big earthquake in 2008 which had its epicenter here. A great addition to this lovely morning!
Seljalandsfoss
After Hveragerði we will drive through Selfoss, Hella and Hvolsvöllur to get to the famously spectacular Seljalandasfoss. This breathtaking waterfall will leave your jaw dropped. You have definitely seen pictures of Seljalandasfoss but nothing beats the experience of getting a little wet when walking behind the falling water!
Skogafoss
Shortly after visiting Seljalandasfoss we will make a stop near another Icelandic gem – The Skógafoss. This waterfall is a completely different beast! A huge amount of water is dropping down with tremendous force forming an ever-present water mist that creates beautiful rainbows. It feels like you can almost touch them.
Vik
We will make another stop in this charming little town. It has plenty to offer. First of all: FOOD! After all that excitement, you probably got hungry! We will stop at a restaurant here where you can buy food and gifts. We will also visit the famous black beach in Vík and if we are lucky, we can encounter some puffins on the cliffs.
Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach
Oh my, oh my… This is certainly one of the brightest highlights of this tour. Named one of the top 10 beaches in the whole world by National Geographic, this spectacular location will leave you speechless. Basalt stacks, roaring waves and stunning scenery! But be careful not to come to close to the waves as the can be extremely dangerous!
Sólheima Glacier
Iceland is known as the land of Ice and Fire, here is the ice! We visit the face of the glacier - will you be lucky enough to see it calve a new iceberg? From the safety of the newly built viewpoint you can clearly see the layers of ash in the ice from the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull - the volcano that stopped almost all European air travel.

FAQs
What should I bring on the tour with me?
Depending on the nature of your tour, you may want to pack a bit more or less than usual. If you are going to be doing some hiking or a lot of walking, it is recommended that you bring a good pair of boots that are sturdy for walking on uneven paths. The weather can also be unpredictable, so it is better if your boots and jacket are weatherproof. Refreshments will also depend on the tour. If you would like, you are welcome to bring snacks of your own, but your guide may also stop at local gas stations that offer a selection of snacks, and sometimes hot food as well.
How long are the stops on your scheduled tours? Is there time to go hiking?
The lengths of the stops are not decided in beforehand. It all depends on the group, weather, route and tour guide. You will probably be able to go on a short hike – please consult your guide.
What is the standard tip for tour guides?
Tourism in Iceland is young and there is no custom for donating tips nor is it mandatory or expected but greatly appreciated if you wish to show your appreciation in that way.
Can I bring a drone with me?
That depends on the location. Flying drones on Iceland National Parks requires a special permit. All tours in glacier outlets of Vatnajökull take place in Vatnajökull National Park, this includes all tours from Skaftafell and from Jökulsárlón. In order to fly your drone, you need to request a permission to the National Park. You can find the information on their website. Same applies for tours on Thingvellir National Park (such as Golden Circle, Golden Circle and Snorkeling, and Snorkeling in Silfra), information can be found on the National Park website website. Keep in mind there are other areas where done use is also forbidden and/or discouraged by local communities. It is safe to bring a drone to Sólheimajökull glacier without a permit. However, you need to keep in mind that we can’t delay the other members of your tour to accommodate filmmaking.
Do you offer private tours?
Yes, we most certainly do! Please contact to icelanddiscover@icelanddiscover.is with your request and we will definitely look into it and respond with the ideal tour for you and your travel group.
