Tour Description

Come aboard a luxurious yacht and see the incredible wealth of marine wildlife that lives in the waters just off the shores of Reykjavík City. Nature lovers looking to see some of Iceland’s majestic whales, dolphins, and porpoises, but who wish to do so in a small group, should grab this chance now.

The ship sets sails from Reykjavík’s Old Harbour and during your journey, you’ll sail among the small islands in the Faxaflói Bay, as well as along the coast of Reykjavík, providing you with a fantastic view of the city as you search for the wildlife in the water.

The most common sights are minke and humpback whales, dolphins and porpoises. However, there is always a chance to spot a few orcas (also known as killer whales) as well as a wealth of other species. The professional team onboard is very experienced in spotting whales and are dedicated to making sure their passengers leave with a smile!

This tour is conducted on a beautiful yacht called the Amelia Rose. With three panoramic deck areas, the vessel provides every passenger with a good view of the surrounding area as well as an excellent opportunity to capture some amazing pictures. The decks are partially covered, providing some shelter from wind and rain, and you can easily circle them to enjoy the best views.

Amelia Rose is designed as an offshore vessel, making it better adapted to take on the turbulent waves of Iceland’s waters, ensuring a smoother sail with less probability of passengers experiencing nausea or seasickness.

If that’s not enough, on this tour, you don’t have to worry about overcrowding or not getting the right spot to see the whales. You’ll be sailing on Faxaflói in a small group which will make your experience personal, meaningful and memorable!

So don’t hesitate! Book now to enjoy whale watching in both style and comfort on this small-group whale watching tour. Check availability by choosing a date.

Good to Know
We recommend all guests dress warmly in multiple layers and good footwear as it is always colder on the water. Don’t forget your camera! *Normally we go out on Amelia Rose, however if we have fewer than 12 passengers we may take our smaller yacht, Axel Rose, as it reduces our impact on the environment.

FAQs
How should I dress? What should I bring?
We recommend that all guests dress warmly in layers and sturdy footwear as it is always much colder out on the water. We will provide you with warm blankets, and you can always stay warm by viewing from our wheelhouse with our friendly captains. Don´t forget your camera and a sense of adventure!
What if there are no sightings?
If there are no sightings on the tour, we´ll offer you a complimentary voucher for the same tour on the next available day. This voucher is valid for three years. Refunds are not offered in the event of no sightings.
What is the cancellation policy?
You may cancel a booking up to 48 hours prior to departure without penalty if your travel plans change. A cancellation with less than 48 hours notice will incur a 50% charge.
How close do we get to the whales?
As we abide by the Ice Whales Code of Conduct, we are allowed to get within 100 meters (110 yards) of the whales. At this distance you will get an excellent view of these gentle giants. Sometimes the whales choose to approach us and pop back up from a dive right next to the boat!
What are the chances of seeing whales?
The chance of seeing whales varies with the seasons. We work with a network of whale watching operators and share sighting information. This gives us a sighting success rate of about 90% in the summer months, less during the winter. We start at the Old Harbor and, traveling along the Reykjavík coastline, our passengers will see a variety of wildlife including porpoises, seals, dolphins, and other species.
Do you see more whales on the morning or the afternoon trip?
Whales are spotted equally in the mornings and afternoons.
Will I get seasick?
Everyone is affected by the ocean differently. Our ships are very stable, and we don’t go out in very rough weather. However, we do supply seasickness tablets for free if you want them. We also recommend having a full stomach before you get on board and sipping drinks throughout the trip if you are concerned.
